Is it a parka, an anorak or a duffel coat? The truth is they are more than similar in appearance. They all have origins in the military.

The first snorkel parka was the USAF N-3B parka, which was developed in the United States during the early 1950s for Air Force flight crews based in extremely cold areas. An anorak is basically a parka, with a different name.

A duffel coat (also duffle coat, for example in Canada) is a coat made from duffel, a rough and thick, woolen material.

The name originates from Duffel, a town in the province of Antwerp in Belgium where the fabric comes from.

Whatever the name, these parkas for all budgets will keep you warm on the coldest of cold streets, without compromising on style.

1. OSC Siku

Established in 2009, every OSC coat is built by hand in OSC's Canadian factory and tested through arctic expeditions. Inspired by the traditional Inuit word for “sea ice”, the Siku offers knee-length protection, which is both flattering and protecting even on the coldest days.

The Siku features quality 3M reflective piping for enhanced visibility, a smart collar enabling custom shaping, a quadruple Button Snap System, OSC protective seal for durability and strength around cuff and a ‘Snowbelt’ for added warmth and security when required.

High quality heavy-duty YKK zippers are employed throughout, while innovative backpack straps enable portability.

2. Boohoo Quilted Sporty Parka

Founded in 2006, Boohoo is now a global brand with over 100 new products dropping every day and a philosophy of 'the latest looks for less'.

This Quilted Sporty Padded Parka is no exception, looking more premium than the price tag suggests.

Breathe life into your new season layering with this Quilted Sporty Padded Parka, which will protect you from the harshest elements without breaking your wallet.

Crafted from a 100% Nylon and a 100% Polyester lining, this parka is a great value option.

3. Superdry Canadian Mountain Range Down Parka

The Superdry women’s Canadian Mountain Range Down parka has an 80/20 premium duck down filling and a low down fill power rating, meaning it will help keep you warm in the coldest temperatures but it also offers great insulation.

The Canadian Mountain Range down parka also features a removable faux fur trim, a single zip fastening with poppers, a zipped inside pocket and four external pockets.

4. Canada Goose Mystique Parka Black Label

Founded in a small warehouse in Toronto around 60 years ago, Canada Goose has grown to become one of the world's leading makers of luxury apparel.

The full-length Mystique Parka offers maximum protection in the harshest of environments. An elaborate quilt-through design promotes even heat distribution without adding excessive bulk, meaning this parka is as light as it is warm.

Interior backpack straps enable the parka to be comfortably carried over your shoulders when temperatures rise.

5. Canada Goose Rossclair Parka Black Label

When buying a parka you really get what you pay for. Quality of materials is more critical than perhaps any other garment.

Hence, our top list had to feature another great parka from premium outwear manufacturer, Canada Goose.

This mid-length parka is crafted from Canada Goose's durable Arctic Tech fabric, which is designed to face the harshest of elements.

It can be worn sleek and straight or reign in the adjustable waist to create a flattering A-line silhouette, while also helping to keep out icy drafts.

A longer back hem offers superior protection from cold and wind.

6. Obosoyo Hooded Puffer Parka

The Obosoyo is a good value parka made from a Polyester shell and filled with 90% white duck down and 10% feathers.

The fur on the jacket is removable via buttons, while the hood itself is removable via a zipper.

The hood doesn't have a string so can't be tightened in bad weather, but the front zipper goes high up to form a turtle neck.

There are two pockets on the front for your hands or a cell phone. This parka surprised people with its warmth for the price.

The only criticism was that it lacked some water resistance when subjected to heavy rain.

7. Elf Sack Padded Down Parka

Another well-tailored budget offering, the Elf Sack Chevron Quilt coat is made from a 100% nylon shell with polyester lining and premium down filling.

It features a double-end zipper, striped drawcord at hood, invisible on-seam zip pocket and hooded and fleece ‘storm cuffs’ that help seal in warmth.

This jacket makes the list for being a well-made parka at a reasonable price point. It runs small so buying one side up isn’t a bad idea.

8. Eddie Bauer Women's Lodge Down Duffle Coat

Built for comfort in the coldest weather this ultralight, 650 fill premium down parka extends from head to below the knee.

With fleece lining in the upper body at the collar and interior storm cuffs, this jacket may be the warmest on the list.

The 100% polyester shell features ‘StormRepel’ durable water-repellent (DWR) finish and sheds moisture so it doesn't soak into the fabric.

It also features a removable hood and faux fur ruff.

A two-way front zip is provided for convenience, along with two exterior and one interior secure-zip pockets. An adjustable, drawcord is provided at the waist for a slimmer look.

9. Lookbook Faux Fur Puffer Jacket

Another sub US$70 coat of impressive warmth and quality.

This polyester blend parka in black features a removable hood with faux fur trim, metal buttons, metal zip-up closure, toggle buttons, and two functional side pockets that are perfect for keeping your essentials.

A decent budget alternative to the Eddie Bauer.

10. Northface MetroPolis II

The North Face is about as serious a brand can get when it comes to braving the elements and this parka will certainly protect your upper body, hips, and thighs from exposure.

Exceptionally warm, this media compatible 550-fill down jacket has been upgraded for 2019 to include flattering contoured quilting around the waist.

Additional features include a removable, snap-off hood, down cocoon brim, two-way front zip, covered-zip hand pockets, darts on back waist for shaping, rolled-over elastic inner cuffs and hem. On the chest is the iconic North Face logo.
